Catalyst recognizes that there are many different ways people may choose to identify based on their gender or sexuality. We are committed to understanding and accommodating unique needs that people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer, and/or many additional identities (LGBTQ+) may have when it comes to receiving support in their relationships. In alignment with our agency value of understanding the diversity of human experience, we have expanded our services to provide more culturally sensitive support for people who identify as part of these communities. All Catalyst staff and volunteers receive ongoing training about LGBTQ+ identities, barriers that these individuals face when attempting to access services, unique dynamics of abuse that can occur in these relationships, and cultural sensitivity. We are proud to welcome people who represent LGBTQ+ communities to our staff.
Crisis Intervention ServicesOur hotline and drop-in offices are safe spaces for all. However, we understand that additional advocacy may be needed for LGBTQ+ individuals when it comes to certain issues, including legal and social service advocacy. Catalyst Advocates are available to provide this additional support.
Safe HousingOur housing programs are safe spaces for people who identify as LGBTQ+. Catalyst Advocates work to support and accommodate the needs of everyone who participates in our housing programs. We will not refuse shelter to anyone with an immediate safety concern in their relationship on the basis of gender or gender identity.
CounselingAlthough all of our counselors are equipped to provide competent care to LGBTQ+ individuals, we have a counselor on staff who has particular expertise and experience working with LGBTQ+ communities. If you would like to receive counseling from this staff member, simply call our Chico Business Office at 530-343-7711 to request an appointment.
Education and OutreachCatalyst’s community education staff provides training involving the dynamics of abuse in LGBTQ+ relationships, barriers to accessing services, and cultural sensitivity. Our LGBTQ+ Outreach Specialist provides additional outreach and education to LGBTQ+ communities in an effort to increase access to information about intimate partner violence, Catalyst services, and building healthy relationships. We have curriculum tailored to the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and youth. If your Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) or LGBTQ+ group would like to invite Catalyst for a presentation, ongoing group, or workshop, call us at 530-343-7711. We also invite you to call us if your agency is interested in a training to increase capacity to serve LGBTQ+ populations, or if you would like us to provide an informational table at your LGBTQ+ focused event.
Community CollaborationIn an effort to increase access to Butte County’s LGBTQ+ community, Catalyst has partnered with Stonewall Alliance Center of Chico. Together, Stonewall and Catalyst collaborate on many LGBTQ+ inclusive events, with particular focus on celebrating identity, building healthy relationships, and providing education to the community.
One partnership is planning for the annual Chico Pride Weekend, a series of events that increases awareness and celebrates LGBTQ+ identities. If you are interested in learning more, please visit Stonewall’s website.
